When shopping our collection of signet rings for women or signet rings for men, an important consideration is whether or not you would like an open back or solid back. We offer a good mix of both kinds, and sometimes the only difference between two nearly identical styles is that one has a solid back and one has an open back (a good example of this is SRRS284 vs. SRRS274). It can be hard to describe in words what this means exactly, but the picture above illustrates it perfectly. The ring on the left has a solid back, and the one on the right has an open back.

Basically a solid back means that the ring has more gold and the space behind the face is closed. Because the ring is heavier and has more gold, the ring is more expensive. It is also more substantial and is overall a more quality piece, which is why we often recommend solid back signet rings to our customers.

However, an open back ring also has its advantages. An open back basically means the part behind the ring’s face is hollowed out. This means there is less gold, and therefore the ring is more affordable and more lightweight. In the example of SRRS284 vs. SRRS274, the price difference at the time of this writing was $170. You could buy a second small signet ring with $170 (at least until gold prices go up again).

Whichever style of back you prefer, I hope this post helps you understand this important design┬ádistinction to our collection of signet rings. To find out if a ring has a solid back or open back, just look under “Product Description” and you’ll find the information there.
